Early Neurological Stimulation, Sound Exposure, Age-Appropriate Socialization

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are famous for their sweet, affectionate nature, but true emotional resilience does not happen by accident.

 

From the moment our puppies are born into our home, we use a structured, science-backed developmental curriculum designed to shape their developing brains. By combining genetic selection with targeted early neurological stimulation and sensory exposure therapy, we transform naturally sensitive spaniels into adaptable, high-functioning adult dogs.

 

Our puppies do not just grow up; they are meticulously prepared to handle the sights, sounds, and stressors of your busy everyday life with calm, steady confidence.

Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS)

ENS involves five mild daily stressors administered to puppies from days 3 to 16 of life. At CK Cavaliers, we practice ENS with each puppy once a day, for up to 1-minute each, including:

​

  • Tactile Stimulation

  • Head Held Erect

  • Head Pointed Down

  • Supine Position

  • Thermal Stimulation

​

Benefits of including ENS in our breeding program: stronger cardiovascular and adrenal performance, higher disease resistance, and improved tolerance to stress and new environments

age appropriate socialization

Socialization reduces the number of things in the world that frighten a puppy by continually providing the experience of first being afraid and then recovering. The more things a puppy experiences during critical socialization periods, the less bothered the puppy will be throughout life when confronted by new things.

"According to research by behaviorists John Paul Scott and John Fuller, a dog’s behavioral makeup is 35 percent genetic and 65 percent due to socialization, nutrition, health care, training, and management. In other words, socialization cannot change temperament. However, it certainly plays a role in behavior modification."

sound exposure

Cavaliers are highly empathetic and naturally sensitive; we utilize a structured, science-based sound exposure program starting early in their lives. This crucial step builds emotional resilience, builds confidence, and helps prevent future noise phobias.

 

Sound Exposure for puppies involves introducing everyday and loud noises at a very low volume and safe distance starting around 3 weeks of age until 16 weeks.

​Passive Auditory Enrichment: Starting at 3 weeks, we play low-volume background tracks of diverse sounds during calm times, nursing, and naps.

​

Positive Association: As the puppies grow, we pair specific sounds (like a vacuum or siren) with high-value rewards, meal times, and active play sessions.

​

Gradual Progression: We only increase the volume of sounds once the entire litter shows complete neutrality or joyful curiosity.
